What is the best thread for tassel making?
Sometimes known as yarn tassels, tassels can be made from just about any size thread but we think wool or embroidery threads are the best type to start with. Likewise choose card that is quite strong and won’t bend too easily once you begin to wrap the thread around it.
How to make tassels
Making tassels is really simple. Once you have mastered the basic technique you can get extra creative. First decide how long you want the tassel to be.
Top Tip
Cut your card a little bit longer than the planned tassel length. That way you can always trim the bottom a little to tidy it up without making it too short. For a quick version you can use your hand.
Once you’re ready to start:
• Begin by wrapping the thread around the card or hand. Try not to pull it too tight and aim for at least twenty wraps but you can always do lots more.
• Carefully cut along one end.
• Remove the tassel from the card.
• Take another piece of thread and wrap about one third of the way down and secure tightly with a knot. Tuck in any excess from this single thread.
• Trim the tassel.
You can add tassels to literally most things such as zips, clothing, keyrings, jewellery and even use them as decoration on cards or gifts.
