Top Tip
For diagonals and chevrons, cut the length of the cardboard tube after wrapping the fabric over the top. This makes it easier to add the elastic bands.
How to Make
-
Before you start:
- Rinse the headband by hand then squeeze out most of the water until it is damp then pull out ant creases or wrinkles. Place the polythene sheet from the kit over your work surface. To make diagonal lines: (orange + pink headband)
- Fold the headband in half so the 2 ends meet, making the fabric approximately 42cm in length. Wrap the folded headband around a cardboard tube covered with a plastic bag. Wrap elastic bands around the headband so the fabric is held tightly around the tube. To make a chevron pattern: (purple + blue headband)
- Fold the headband in half along the whole length of the fabric to make a thin strip. Hold the middle to keep the long fold in place then fold it over so the 2 ends meet, making the fabric approximately 42cm. Wrap the folded headband around a cardboard tube covered with a plastic bag. Wrap elastic bands around the headband so the fabric is held tightly around the tube. To circle patterns: (black + purple headband)
- Fold the headband in half so the 2 ends meet. Hold the middle of the fabric then fold it over into a triangle. Fold over again to make a thinner triangle then tightly wrap elastic bands at about 2cm, 5cm and 8cm from the end of the folded point. This will make radiating pattern in the middle of the headband. To make more circle patterns, fold over one end of the headband so it hangs down at right angles to the headband with a diagonal folded edge. Fold it over again to make a thinner diagonal fold then tightly wrap an elastic band 2-3cm from the point. To dye the headband :
- Wear the disposable gloves in the kit then follow the instructions for adding water to the dye bottle and applying it onto the fabric. Squeeze the dye over the cushion cover. Press and roll the headband to make sure the dye covers the fabric. Leave the fabric to dry for 6-8 hours hanging over a bowl with newspaper or paper towel underneath. Remove all the elastic bands (with gloves on) then open out the headband. If it still feels very wet, remove any excess dye with paper towel or leave it to dry for a bit longer. Rinse the fabric in water then leave it to fully dry. Cover it with a pressing cloth then iron out the creases.
