Spell It Cards

Improve spelling and comprehension with this fun-packed game. All you need is card, stickers and felt pens, and you’re ready to get creating. Make as many word cards as you like, and you can adapt the activity for older children with more complex words. Children can practise their handwriting by filling in the blanks, then read the word out loud when it’s complete.

How to Make

  1. Make a list of words you’re going to feature on the cards. Using a pencil and ruler, divide a piece of A4 card into four pieces and cut out. Repeat until you have as many cards as you need.
  2. On each card, spell out the beginning and the end of the word in self-adhesive letter stickers, drawing underscores in pen for the blank letters. Either draw or use a sticker above the word to illustrate the card, so children can look at the picture and understand what the word beneath should say.
  3. Repeat until you have completed all your cards. If you want to use the game once, leave it as it is, as children can write the missing letters straight onto the card.
  4. If you want to use the game repeatedly without having to make new cards, create letter tiles from card and self-adhesive letter stickers, so children can select the missing letters from the pile and place them in the correct order in the blank spaces to complete the word.

Top Tip

If you use letter tiles, make sure the background colour of the card is the same as the word cards as it makes it easier and clearer.
