Magnetic Fish Game

This simple game is a great way to introduce the concept of magnets to younger children. They will learn that the fish will only ‘bite’ if the magnet connects with the paper clips thereby teaching them about magnetic and non-magnetic materials

How to Make

  1. First of all, make your pond. Cut a wavy shape from light blue card and stick it to a green border. Outline the blue with brown pen for earth, then add details like grass, pebbles and ripples in the water with your coloured pens.
  2. Now it's time for the fish. Snip simple shapes from different shades of card making sure they're not too big. Ours are approximately 7cm long and 4cm wide. Next, decorate with wiggle-eyes and draw on scales using coloured pen. Finally, add a paper clip to each fish.
  3. For your fishing rod, take a pipe cleaner and tie some yarn to one end. Peel the backing off the magnet and stick the other end of the yarn to it. Add a little double-sided tape to a piece of paper and stick on top of the magnet to secure the yarn safely between. Cut away any excess paper or yarn to finish.

Top Tip

You could label each fish with a different child's initial and encourage them to fish for their letter to aid recognition and literacy skills too!
