Button Fingerprint Snail

This snail isn’t all that he seems at first – his shell is waiting to be filled with a flurry of fingerprints! Children can count the buttons, draw out the snail and improve hand-eye coordination with their finger-painting.

How to Make

  1. Draw out a spiral shape onto the centre of A4 card for the snail shell, using the picture as a guide. Then, lay out a selection of buttons in different colours and sizes along the bottom of the shell, starting with the smallest sizes on the left and gradually growing in size as you go along. This will form the snail’s body.
  2. Once you’re happy with the arrangement of the buttons, secure them in place using adhesive and leave to dry. Add antenna to the snail, drawing them on with pen - you could also add wiggle eyes to the top-most button to create the face.
  3. Now the creative part begins! Children must ‘fill in’ the snail’s shell using fingerprints - dabbing their fingers into the paint pads and pressing down into the shell, within the lines of the spiral, as shown. The activity isn’t complete until the shell is fully coloured in - and you can mix up the shades or paint in a particular sequence to make the activity a little more complicated.

Top Tip

Don’t use too much water when finger-painting or the prints will bleed once pressed down onto the paper, making them more likely to smudge or go over the lines.
