Pipe Cleaner Wheat craft activity

How to Make

Step 1

Start by covering your paper straw with coloured tape. Wrap the tape all the way around and tuck in any edges neatly.

Step 2

Take your pipe cleaners and cut them into smaller pieces. First fold each pipe cleaner in half, then in half again, and once more. You should end up with small pieces — fold these in half too. You’ll need 24 folded pieces (about 3 whole pipe cleaners) for one wheat stalk.

Step 3

Begin at the top of the straw. Glue one folded pipe cleaner piece into the top. Then, working downwards, glue 3 folded pieces side by side in a row. Keep going, making 8 rows in total, leaving about 1cm between each row.

Step 4

Make the leaves by folding 1 or 2 more pipe cleaners in half. Glue them onto the straw about 4cm below your rows of wheat pieces.

Step 5

Wrap some more coloured washi tape around the straw to cover the ends where the pipe cleaners are glued.

Step 6

Gently bend the leaves outwards to give your wheat stalk a natural, curved shape.
