How to Make

  1. Measure and cut your pieces of fabric to size. You will need one piece 55 x 8cm and another piece 30 x 12cm.
  2. Paint both pieces of fabric with white textile paint to create a base to begin painting your design onto, leave to dry. Next paint your chosen design onto both pieces using textile paint, leave to dry.
  3. When completely dry, take the larger piece of the two and fold the fabric in half along the longest edge so that the unpainted side is on the outside, pin in place. Next, using white thread sew a seam all the way down the longest edge until you are left with a fabric tube. When you are finished, carefully remove the pins.
  4. To turn the fabric tube inside out, attach a safety pin to the inside of one of the edges of fabric, tie a long piece of thread to the safety pin and post the thread through the tube so it hangs out the bottom. Scrunch up as much fabric as you can onto the safety pin and using the thread at the bottom begin to pull the tube inside out until you have turned the tube inside out completely. Remove the safety pin when you are done.
  5. Cut three pieces of black elastic 23cm in length, place these pieces together and tie them in a knot at one end to attach them together. Post the elastic through the fabric tube, scrunch up the fabric so that the elastic pokes out at either end and tie both ends of elastic together with a tight knot.
  6. Fold in the seam of one of the edges of fabric and then tuck the other end of the fabric tube inside this one. Sew the two edges together using white thread.
  7. Take the smaller piece of fabric and with a pencil draw around the bow template provided, cut this shape out with scissors. Fold the shape in half along the longest edge so that the unpainted side is on the outside, pin in place. Next sew a seam from one edge to not quite the centre and the same on the other side. When you are finished, carefully remove the pins. Turn the fabric inside out and then sew up the hole in the centre using white thread. You will now be left with a bow shape.
  8. Lastly, wrap the bow shape around the scrunchie seam and tie it in a knot.

Top Tip

To turn the fabric tube inside out after sewing the seam, attach a safety pin to the inside of one of the edges of fabric, tie a long piece of thread to the safety pin and post the thread through the tube so it hangs out the bottom. Scrunch up as much fabric as you can onto the safety pin and using the thread at the bottom, begin to pull the tube inside out until you have turned the tube inside out completely. Remove the safety pin when you are done.
