How to Make

  1. Wash all the mugs in warm soapy water to remove any grease, and dry thoroughly.

Make sure you give all of the porcelain pens and paints a good shake before use. Use the template to help you transfer the designs onto the mug in pencil first. Any parts that aren’t covered with the paint or pen can easily be removed with a cotton bud once you have finished the piece.

  2. MINT:
    1. Using the Ice Green and Reseda porcelain paints, mix a light green. Use a small round brush and start to paint in the leaves using the picture as a guide. Apply the paint in thin layers so that it doesn’t run. Before the paint has fully dried, you can add detail to the leaves by using a sharp point to scratch the paint away. This technique is called sgraffito. A large needle or small crochet hook works well.
    2. Mix a mid green and paint in the next leaves using the picture as your guide. Repeat the sgraffito technique as above.
    3. Mix a dark green and fill the remaining leaves using the picture as your guide. Paint in the stem. Repeat the sgraffito technique as above.
    4. Add any last details/ edging to the leaves with the dark green porcelain pen.
    5. Use the black porcelain pen to write ‘Mint’.
    6. Allow to dry for at least 4 hours and then bake in the oven, following the porcelain paint instructions to make your mugs dishwasher safe.
  3. CHAMOMILE:
    1. Use the white porcelain paint to fill in the chamomile petals. Before it has dried, mix a little more white with a touch of orange to create a lemon colour and add in more petals over the top. Use the brush strokes to help create the petal shapes. Before the paint has fully dried, you can add detail to the petals by using a sharp point to scratch the paint away. This technique is called sgraffito. A large needle or small crochet hook works well.
    2. Use the Reseda green to paint in the flower stems and leaves. Once dry use the dark green porcelain pen to add in little line details and leaves over the top.
    3. Mix a darker lemon yellow with the white and orange. Paint in the middle of the chamomile flowers. Use the sgraffito technique to make little dots and circles to add some depth to the middles.
    4. Use the black porcelain pen to write ‘Chamomile’.
    5. Allow to dry for at least 4 hours and then bake in the oven, following the porcelain paint instructions to make your mugs dishwasher safe.
  4. ROSE HIP & HIBISCUS:
    1. Using the red porcelain pen, start to fill in the hibiscus flower petals. Start at the centre and colour the whole of each petal, one at a time to the outside edge. Once the whole petal is covered, go over it a second time (while still wet) to get a more even coverage. Before the paint has fully dried, you can add detail to the petals by using a sharp point to scratch the paint away. This technique is called sgraffito. A large needle or small crochet hook works well. Use the picture as a guide.
    2. Colour the rose hip buds using the red porcelain pen. Use the sgraffito technique to add some detail to the buds.
    3. Mix a mid green and paint in a few of the leaves, add the sgraffito effect. Use the dark green porcelain pen to fill in the other leaves and add the sgraffito effect.
    4. Using the black porcelain pen, add the final little line details to the centre of the hibiscus flower and the tops of the rose hip buds. Write ‘Rose Hip & Hibiscus’
    5. Finally use the yellow porcelain paint to add in the pollen.
    6. Allow to dry for at least 4 hours and then bake in the oven, following the porcelain paint instructions to make your mugs dishwasher safe.
