African art has a definite emphasis on the human figure; in particular, the face. Our African masks for kids are just begging to be painted and have eyelashes, spots, squiggles and ceremonial markings added to them. We have all the materials to bring blank masks to vivid life – including paints, pens, feathers, glitters, sequins, jewels and beads.
Ritual masks often have a spiritual meaning to the African people who create them and are frequently used in dances and ceremonies. Making them is a great introduction to finding out about other cultures; perhaps a class could hold their own dancing ceremony once the masks are completed?
It is not unusual for tribes to ascribe special status to mask makers; young kids who make masks today should also derive great credit and satisfaction from such an enjoyable artistic activity.
